South Australia is a globally recognised leader in photonics thanks to focused and targeted strategic investments which have created
a critical mass of outstanding researchers, research infrastructure, and successful companies. The State has a very strong tradition of successfully commercialising photonic products; the current photonics-based revenue in South Australia being approximately $200M per annum, with a related employment of approximately 800 people. South Australia also ranks in the top ten in the world in optical fibre-based sensing and application-specific solid-state laser design; with similar strengths in biophotonics and advanced optical materials.

The University of Adelaide, The University of South Australia, Flinders University, and the Defence Science Technology Group, together with established enterprises like Aerometrex Pty Ltd, BAE Systems, Ellex, Fugro LADS, Heliostat, Maptek, Norseld Pty Ltd, SJ Cheesman, Trajan Scientific and Medical, Ziltek Pty Ltd, and start-ups including Australian Advanced Materials Manufacturing, Arkwright Technologies, Availer, CryoClock, IR Sensors, MiniProbes, Mirage Photonics, Modular Photonics, RedChip Photonics, SensAbility and Voxiebox are all a dynamic part of the thriving photonics ecosystem in South Australia.

South Australia is a vibrant region where people and businesses thrive, with key strengths in defence manufacturing, resources, agriculture, viniculture and medical technologies.
